In a recent radio broadcast in Finland, there was speculation about the potential decriminalization of cannabis. Agronomy student and hemp researcher, Tommi Saltiola, suggested this could lead to a billion-dollar industry, but questioned who would profit from it. Despite this, the scenario seems unlikely as major political parties oppose it. Saltiola also warned that the financial benefits could end up leaving Finland.
As cannabis is increasingly seen as a health product and not just a recreational drug, farmers like Tommi in Finland are exploring its potential, navigating evolving regulations and eyeing the burgeoning cannabis industry with optimism.
Radio Central Finland's Lotta Merenmies had a morning coffee chat to start the week with Central Finnish hemp entrepreneurs. Tommi Saltiola & Co discussed where the interest in this ancient Finnish crop originated from and what all can now be produced and supplied to the consumer from hemp.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a trendy health product known for its potential stress-relieving effects. While CBD does not have a sales license in Finland, sellers are well-informed about the official regulations and do their best to offer it in the limits of law.
In Finland, access to medicinal cannabis, especially CBD, is strictly controlled and it's only available for limited conditions. Patients and industry representatives are calling for review and reform of these regulations, highlighting the therapeutic potential of CBD and the need for better patient care. However, regulatory authorities maintain that the classification of CBD is complex and requires careful consideration.

Tommi Saltiola, an agrology student, has planted a special crop, oil hemp, on his family's farm this summer. They expect a hemp seed harvest from a one-hectare field. Hemp is durable and lighter than carbon fiber, making it a suitable material for various uses, including as a protein source for animal feed and as a food supplement. Hemp seeds have the right kind of fatty acids and can be used in diverse ways, such as in cooking, as horse bedding, or in smoothies and salads. Hemp fibers can be processed into various products, including a salad dressing. Oil hemp is a different variety, and its seeds are used for oil production, which is gaining popularity as an alternative to carbon fiber. The hemp industry is growing, and Tommi Saltiola is researching both oil and fiber hemp varieties and exploring their multiple applications in the fields of nutrition, textiles, and bioenergy.
